First Birdstrike Death of 2010 Season at Qwest

The first bird-strike death of the 2010 season was found on the morning of April 18th on the west side of the Qwest Center Omaha. It was a white-throated sparrow near the box office entry towards the south end.

The mortality had just occurred as the carcass was still fresh.

This was the first survey for bird strikes in the downtown Omaha area done this year, and the earliest fresh occurrence of a bird strike in the area. Surveys in the previous two years did not get started until the latter part of April, or early May.

The sparrows death indicates a longer period of time when strikes occur at Omaha, and would also indicate a greater extent of mortality than previously projected.
